Description	The organisers have put together impressive committees which are working hard to present an excellent programme providing an overview of the latest developments in transfusion medicine.Globally, we have to adjust to aging populations and a general decrease in altruistic behaviour in our rapidly developing societies. No biotechnical substitutes to standard blood components will become available for routine use in the next few years. On the contrary, due to the implementation of more complex surgical procedures the demand for blood products will even increase. Blood products have to be as safe as possible but ensuring a sufficient supply is also vital. Furthermore, medical counselling and close cooperation with our clinical colleagues are key elements in making optimal use of scarce blood components. Transfusion medicine must be a part of medical training since blood transfusion still plays a critical role in supportive patient care in modern medicine.

Ninth Cooley's Anemia Symposium

5th Course in Statistical Genetic Analysis of Complex Phenotypes

Registrations are still open for the 5th Course in Statistical Genetic Analysis of Complex Phenotypes which will take place at the EuroMediterranean University Centre of Ronzano in Bologna from 22nd to 25th June 2009. Deadline for registration: 19th June.

The course is intended for researchers directly involved in the statistical analysis of complex traits and disorders, and will primarily address the methods and applications of genetic association and linkage studies. It will consist of general lectures followed by hands-on computer-based workshops. It is an intermediate level course and some knowledge of genetics and statistics is a prerequisite.

We are organizing the 9th Course in Genetic Counselling in Practice (Bologna, 6-11 June 2009) which will take place in Bologna and will also be webcasted live through the EGF website to our Remote Training Centres (RTCs) based on the Hybrid courses format. Please contact giuseppe.curcio@eurogene.org in order to include your institution in the list of RTCs for this specific online course.

Genome Wide Association Studies: the last mile problem

Description	The HGVS organises two one day meetings per year as a forum for scientists to exchange ideas and form collaborations. The meetings are designed to update and increase knowledge of human genome variation and generally attract a stimulating and interesting collection of abstracts in all fields of human genome variation making it an ideal forum to share information and results. We invite members and non-members alike to attend what promises to be a stimulating meeting. Recently, there has been dramatic expansion in the frequency and breadth of genome wide association studies for nearly every conceivable human phenotype. In many instances, statistically-significant associations for numerous SNPs (or adjacent genomic intervals) are apparently being replicated by studies of independent cohorts. To date, few of these SNPs have either been established as causative mutations or have led to the unequivocal identification of pathogenic variants. Challenges include the size and gene content of the genomic intervals genetically associated with phenotypes, the penetrance and severity of mutations, and the ability to distinguish pathogenic variants from benign polymorphisms. This conference will emphasize strategies that are being undertaken to identify these mutations. Speakers will present recent intensive efforts to narrow/fine map these intervals, high throughput sequencing approaches to comprehensively define the range of variation in association intervals, and in silico approaches aimed at prioritizing potentially pathogenic sequences in affected individuals.
